I can definitely see how talking about this in a certain way can veer into decidedly Islamophobic territory, like saying "you really think those people who are so much less enlightened than us would send a trans athlete over?"

Exactly what's happening.

That said, I'd caution against some of the things you said here. Forgive me if I'm wrong but your comment seemed to be implying that the only reason Algerians or Muslims would have anti-LGBT views is because of European colonial meddling, which is a problematic assumption in its own way.

I don't think it's problematic to think a former French colony who France has meddled with (and the surrounding region) since then often backing the worst reactionary options, might also exist within that context.

Like as I said I don't know enough about Algeria and their circumstances. But it's rich for westerners on twitter in countries going through their own backsides into reaction to take a high and mighty approach.

But anyway thanks for your time. Have a good weekend.

No. They’ve said it’s narrowed to a governor. Whitmer has said she would decline (I think Pritzker too). So the options seem Josh Shapirio a big zionist, Andy Beshear a pretty generic moderate but decent record on trans rights, and Tim Walz a progressive (within dem standards). So she’ll probably pick the worst option.

Yes, that is the situation and it’s bad. But what I’m saying is that there’s people basically using the situation as an excuse to do Islamophobia and Xenophobia. Like a different Muslim country like Iran could indeed send a trans woman at some point. The problem is Algeria has reactionary laws, not because they’re Muslim.

I haven’t looked into Algeria’s history of bad LGBT treatment, but I wouldn’t be surprised if France (the hosting country) is to blame somewhere along the line too, all things existing in their historic and material contexts.

Another fucked thing about the Olympics trans panic is a bunch of progressive liberal weighing in to saying things like "do you think a bunch of Muslims from the Islamic Republic of Algeria would send a trans woman?"

Finished the Acolyte. Thought it was good. Probably the second-best Star Wars show after Andor (but there's a huge gulf there). Too long. Shouldn't have been like 4hrs. A 2hr movie or two 90minute specials maybe instead.

This Olympics trans panic is completely fucked up. What everyone said would happen when you police gender, there's no trans women to attack so they go after cis women who aren't feminine enough.

The weird thing is that if you use a broader lens on gender (Leslie Feinberg, Judith Butler etc style), where gender non-conforming, "masculine" and "butch" women are transgender, a large swath of female Olympians are kind of trans masc coded just by virtue of being extreme sportswomen.

It's like reactionaries are gazing on this secret truth of the universe that gender is a construct and these gender norms are being subverted by countless atheltes, and then doing a complete 180 to be like "oh they've got to be a man".

You still hear the odd "Flat Screen TV" comments these days and it's like buddy the only CRTs on the market are antiques for hobbyists and they cost more than a basic TV.

It's a tricky situation. It's 100% okay to lie to parents to protect yourself. Work wants you to cover someone? You've got violent diarrhoea and don't want to share a car while shitting your pants? (can be a symptoms of COVID).

If you feel the car trip is completely unavoidable and they won't mask or lower a window, sit in the back wear an N95 and safety glasses, have the AC on as at least that might pull particles away from you with the intakes. The physical amount of Covid you get exposed to when you sick also plays a part in your severity.

If you can get antivirals before or after getting sick (again lie about having covid19 or being unvaccinated if you need to) that reduces severity and chances of long Covid. Spend as much time in Tampa physically away from them or masked.
