Yeah, I think you mis-read my comment and that we agree :)

I'm guessing I'm a bit of an outsider to this community and although I usually keep up with the news I don't dig super deep in any particular direction.

But my take is that any of the regimes mentioned here would jump at the opportunity to be imperialist and already do. I think it's the fundamental rule of the game that they all play.

Man, just when I'd bought all those solar panels.

I think their point is that in a large enough group there will be people who you cease to regard as peers.

I think a much more stable option would be morals defining your identity and being loyal to that.

I'm glad you posted the question - good to think about.

I always forget about this until I see it on Fridays.

I will always upvote it.

Sounds like either a) the dehumidifier is broken or confused b) your apartment has more moisture in it than you thought or c) the moisture is being replenished from somewhere.

I stayed in a friends house a few months ago and she had 4 dehumidifiers running since she bought it. The house was built before damp proofing was a thing and set into a hill, so the place is basically one massive wick for groundwater. It will never be over for her.

It would be funny if Trump's biggest legacy was the mass adoption of open source.

The EU could get a ridiculous amount done if it decided to seriously invest in it.

I think that getting caught up in objections to housing development is a terrible diversion and a waste. Look up a housing estate on a map with satellite view and zoom out so you can compare it to the vast areas which are sprayed with pesticides, herbicides and chemical fertilisers and where grazing destroys biodiversity. All of the above is currently subsidised by taxpayers.

The scope for winning environmentally is enormous in the countryside but instead all the attention gets absorbed by residential planning where the impact is the smallest.

The government should be changing agricultural policy for the environment and wildlife, creating local & accessible nature reserves and forests for the politics and building houses for the people.

That's the spirit 👍

I agree. More parents should take it seriously.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get desktop notifications when a new post is discovered by Newsboat from a given RSS feed?

This figure is extrapolated from responses to a Harvard survey and consists of financial contributions as well as employees labour.

This is just organisations. It makes me wonder what the rough overall value would be if it included the labour of non-affiliated volunteers.

If I'm in a room with people I know and I plan to leave the room for a long time, I tell them where I'm going. If it's for a short time I do not.

What (if anything) is an appropriate time scale to leave a room without announcing when/if you'll be back?

I just came across a cool plugin for batch editing and exporting layers, for GIMP 3.0 RC1 onwards. It's called 'Batcher' and you can find it here.

I just tested it out and it's super flexible and works really well.

Must-have plugin and great to see people jumping on it making new plugins for GIMP 3.X

Does anyone know of an open source rhyming dictionary for Linux, Android or both?

I'm aware of Debian's reputation for not having the most up-to-date software in its repository but have just noticed that Thunderbird is on its current version. Which makes me ask:

When does Debian update a package? And how does it decide when to?

I'm particularly interested in when it will make available the upcoming major release of GIMP to 3.0.

If I want to install and use a different desktop environment than came with my distro, what (if any) problems can I expect to encounter?

I currently use Debian with GNOME and I want an optimised system for music production and graphic design. As far as I can tell, the two main options I have are to make some tweaks to my current system's configuration (rt kernel, swap use, cpu behaviour and others) or to switch to a dedicated media distro which is configured already. The creative distros that I like the look of don't use GNOME though.

Which option will be easiest for me?

What are some of the easiest ways for a beginner to make their system untable when they start tinkering with it?
