I think "struggle to enthusiastically improve the app" is probably an understatement, lol. I doubt this is meant to be a long-term business strategy. It's not like there were any good options here, just her choice of a few bad ones. I wish her luck.

I personally wouldn't try to work with Reddit, if I were a developer, but another factor here is that walking away from a project might be a big risk for someone who doesn't have a backup plan. Christian Selig is a high-profile figure who can afford to walk away from a project. He will be able to rebuild his career quickly and easily, and he knows it. The developer of Infinity likely doesn't have as many opportunities, and may also not feel comfortable taking that risk. I don't know much about her, but if she's not making a whole lot as is, she may legitimately not be able to afford going without an income source for weeks or months. It may be less about making a profit by doing this than about avoiding a catastrophic loss. Selig has admitted he's going to be losing a six-figure amount of money ($250,000, iirc) from shutting down after selling year-long subscriptions. I suspect everyone who has or had a Reddit app looking for alternative income sources, but I don't blame her for trying to make Infinity work for a little while longer.

Shutting down altogether might be a deeper hole, if people have already paid and would have to receive refunds.

You're probably right that the internal culture is bad at Reddit right now, especially since they recently did some layoffs. I also agree that most of the employees are not at fault, though at least one person in their PR department is behaving badly. I don't think Huffman has a strong enough personality to be doing this with absolutely no support from employees (or at least, from board members), but it would only take a few.

Possibly I have been reading different threads than you, though, since I have definitely seen (and made) some broad criticisms of the company, and criticisms that could be interpreted as applying to all employees, even though they might not have been meant that way. (I certainly don't mean to lump everyone at the company together). And in my experience, a lot of cases of hurt feelings online are accidental, because someone just doesn't realize what they're saying could be interpreted as a personal attack by the person who's hurt. Sometimes the comment isn't even particularly negative, it just hits a nerve. It's hard to predict how anyone will feel about anything, which I personally think is one of the most fascinating parts of interacting with other people, though it also adds an element of risk.

But anyway, I suspect most Reddit employees are too busy to be on Lemmy right now, whatever their position in the company. And I certainly hope at least some take the opportunity presented by this drama to get out. Everyone deserves to have a better boss than Huffman.

Ugh, putting nitrile (or vinyl, or p. much any nonporous material) gloves on wet hands is the worst. I have totally wrecked more gloves that way than I would like to admit. And when I get them halfway on and try to do something with the ends of the fingertips flapping off the ends of my actual fingers, the regret is extreme, lol.

That's a nice, positive way to look at it, and I will try to hope that, too. (Not sure if I can, I'm kinda petty, lol). But there are also a lot of reasons why people stick with jobs they hate, or that make them feel bad. And sometimes people try to convince themselves that actually, everything is okay, the boss isn't a scumbag, etc... I just feel like if I were a Reddit admin, this is not a place I would be happy hanging out. I'd be either hurt or angry the whole time. ... but again, I'm kinda petty.

It really does look store bought, but in a good way! (A lot of store bought shirts are lopsided and have loose threads, and yours looks super precise and crisp).

I have two shirt patterns and some inexpensive fabric to test them on, but I've been too chicken to try, lol. Partly I just haven't gotten started with my machine yet, and a shirt is too much to hand sew, but I'm also intimidated by trying to get the fit right, and by making an outer garment. But when I do make one, I want it to look like yours.

...so, they think most of the people on Reddit are Americans, in the 12-17 age range for whom SATs would be relevant? I don't know where they are getting that information, though I suppose it's possible.

I'd hate to be an admin browsing some of the anti-Reddit threads. I'm sure not all of them are absolute drainclogs, but like... I'm sure it's not good for their self-esteem, lol.

That would be an intelligent step to take, but since when has Reddit ever been able to implement new, user-friendly features? There have probably been plenty of employees who have recommended good features over the years, wherever they got the ideas, and been shot down. With Huffman throwing a hissy fit the way he is, I would say they're even less likely to successfully bring out new features than they have been in the past.

Yeah, it is kind of shocking to think the company has been around for 18 years, and their app is still so bad people will pay for third party apps instead.

I wouldn't go back to posting there even for a new CEO, a groveling apology, and a full roll-back of the API policy. I had a sentimental attachment to the site, but it's been going downhill for some time. They might try to fix it, but I will always know that they can ruin it for me at any time. My issue isn't even profit seeking per se, it's the way they have deliberately given the finger to the userbase. I'm just not going to spend any emotional energy trying to give them another chance.
