The keys to Morrowind NPCs not treating you like absolute shit are to not treat the Personality stat as a dump stat and to wear the best clothes you can find
because newer games are made even more for the enjoyment of shareholders than consumers like everything as capitalism advances

anything with weight will somewhat slow you down, I'm just saying that you don't have to choose between armor or clothing, both are wearable at the same time. using unarmored is fine, it's slow to level up, especially as a minor skill.
