That's my point, @pasci_lei. It's natural to downvote something you dislike. And the site's set up to show everyone everything by default. So any community breaking with the hivemind is naturally downvoted by users who are not members of that community.

Honestly I think it is. Much as the underlying architecture expects federation, each instance competes in a market of commoditized goods, which leads to coalescence. So if the fediverse thrives at all, it will be with one giant instance. Perhaps there'll always be a few other tiny instances for nerds (I use the word lovingly) who value that sort of thing, but normal people don't understand the concept of an "instance", and just want to show up at a .com to feast on data.

At any rate, even if you're right about federation, any social media service should seek to accommodate a wide diversity of ideas, opinions, and perspectives.

Encouraging fracturing into factions does no good for anyone. The internet needs a frontpage, and for years that was reddit. Now it seems to be kbin, maybe. Under the hood it may be a distributed system, but in practice normal people want a single website where a wide diversity of topics and opinions is embraced and protected.

There should only be one instance IMHO. And it should be able to support widely diverse communities.

It's a tiny contingent of perhaps 0.01% who happen to be young, naive, nihilist, depressed, and plagued by demons.

You misunderstand. What I said is not hateful, at all. Of course homosexuals exist, just like thieves, murderers, and practitioners of every other sin exist. Everyone acknowledges that. The issue is whether we repent for our sins and do God's will, or take pride in our sins and reject God. Pride itself is a sin (and some say it's the root of all other sins). That makes pride in sin a compound sin. The so-called "pride decorations" in this article are all about pride in sin (specifically the sexual immorality type). While the far-left activists think that's wonderful, and want to call everyone "hateful" and a "bigot" if we disagree, the truth is I expressed neither hatred nor bigotry. I hope we call all come to Christ, and the first step for many is to eliminate all these repugnant "pride decorations".

All of this seems unnecessarily confusing, and massively confusing at that. Why would anyone want to join a different instance? If I comment on one instance, then can I log into a different instance with the same credentials and edit my comment? Why would I want to do that? If I moderate a sub on one instance, then am I still a moderator of that same sub on every other instance? Why don't we all just use one instance? The entire design of this system seems intended to confuse people.

There's a certain syndrome — I bet it has a name, but I've never heard it named — where extremely smart people find it easy to grasp complicated ideas, yet fail to understand that those ideas which they grasp are far too complicated for normal people.

Personally, I know how distributed systems work, and if that's how you want to design your backend for resilience, cool. But such complexity should never be exposed to users. And as a user, I'm here just to finally escape reddit's governance. I want a dead-simple UX, because that's what will attract people to use this platform. Move to a .com, as no other TLD sounds valid. Combine "threads" with "microblogs" and combine "upvotes" with "boosts". Dramatically simplify the UI. There should not be two different "Settings".

If being normal seems far-right to you, then you just might be far-left. The vast majority of normal conservatives, which is everyone from far-right to center-left, do not want sexual immorality constantly shoved down their throats. It's an extremely tiny percentage of the population who think that's a good idea. Like any company, 100% of Starbucks' activity should be to maximize shareholder profit.
