I’ve only just sat down to relax after a long day of work and running around the place. And it’s already close to my bedtime, sigh. Now catching up on the latest Melbourne subreddit drama. Glad this place exists to avoid it all, the updates posted here are all I need to know.

I recently bought a fancy rice cooker (upgraded from the trusty cheapo kmart one button one), and this one has a smaller cup capacity (3c instead of 6 or 10) which is perfect for 2 people who don't need huge quantities of rice. Plus it made amazing rice, including brown rice which I've never managed to cook well before! Very happy hehe

I like the cheapo Kmart one, but I do like a rice cooker that sings.

Just went out to bring the bin in and it looked like I'd taken up smoking again, fookin cold!

late coffee poemLate night coffee, how very European
Though they may not have meant at 1am
You only live once, and it may be quite short
So indulge, treat yourself, this isn't all for naught.

I am very confused by this new platform but I managed to bumble my way here from reddit. Hi DT! I missed you.

Hey brains trust, I need your help with a translation.

Does anyone know of/can think of a word that’s the same/similar to ‘automaton’ that has a bit more… humanity to it? The original uses the word ‘sleepwalker’, but that doesn’t really work well in this translation. Automaton fits a lot better but is too anachronistic. ‘Zombie’ is also anachronistic and is out.

I’ll include the segment I’ve translated so far below under spoiler tags because it’s not exactly pleasant to read. So don’t click/read if you’re not feeling it. Context for those that don’t know: Hiroshima survivor testimony.

spoilerWe were standing in the hallway on the first floor, though it seemed more like we were standing at the gates of Hell. Burnt and wounded naked bodies were crouched all around, screaming and writhing in agony. It was just like hell. I was terrified. I was really, truly afraid to be among such people. But I didn’t have the strength to run away. Before I knew it, I became an automaton, not knowing who I was or where I was going. Once again, I collapsed to the ground where I stood.

I’ve been staring at this word for like an hour trying to work out the best fit.
