Excuse my dumb ass but I'm filling a hole in the door and this is my filling so far. Do I leave it to dry now for a few hours and come back to paint it? Do I need to fill more putty in there?

Yo thatโs fantastic. If that filler is still wet , take all that excess off around the hole. It will be a pain in the arse to sand when itโs dry and by the looks of it, youโll need a top coat of filler anyway.

You gotta sand that before painting. That's rough as at the moment. It might take letting it harden, sanding, re-fill, sand again, then paint. You could take the pins out of the hinges if you had somewhere else to paint the door.
I did sand it before filing in the putty, but if it still feels rough then I'll re-fill and paint again. Don't have more space to pain the door elsewhere unfortunately so this will have to do I guess.
