From Naked Capitalism:

...one has to wonder what the latest Blinken round of visits to the Middle East was supposed to accomplish, since all it did was expose our impotence. Even the Financial Times could not hide that the meetings with Netanyahu and then Arab leaders were a train wreck. Netanyahu rejected even any itty bitty ceasefire, branded a humanitarian pause, to get relief in, demanding that Hamas release all hostages first. The fact that Israel has welched or underperformed on its past begrudging promises to let trucks from Egypt in, would make that a non-starter even before getting to Hamas being sure to stick to its position of wanting to trade hostages for Palestinian prisoners. And of course the Arab states are not about to budge. Blinken got a more pointed version of what he was told before.

Antony Blinken faced intense pressure from regional allies to facilitate an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, laying bare the stark gap between US support for Israel and the outrage in Arab capitals over the siege and bombardment of the strip….

Sameh Shoukry, the Egyptian foreign minister, demanded an unconditional ceasefire, a commitment that Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu bluntly rejected after meeting Blinken on Friday.

Blinken had been expected to “brainstorm” with Arab diplomats the future of Gaza, home to 2.3mn Palestinians, after the war ends. Safadi bluntly rejected those talks as premature. “How can we even entertain what will happen in Gaza when we do not know how Gaza will be left?” he asked Blinken. “Are we going to be talking about a wasteland? Are we talking about a whole population reduced to refugees?”

This comes off as the sort of thing someone who had just read classic texts on negotiating trying to put in practice: “Gee, let’s get a dialogue going! Let’s get to ‘Yes’ on some less fraught issues to pave the way for further agreement!” In addition, “brainstorming” is cringemakingly American. You don’t do that with people who are mad at you. You don’t do that in a crisis. Between independent entities, you do not do that at the top level. You have low level people or emissaries float ideas. So why this exercise? The worst is that Biden and Blinken come off as so disconnected from reality that they though they might get someone to accommodate US needs.

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

You're going to have to (hex)bear with me on the update this week. Have you been feeling generally pretty terrible this last month or so? So have I, and doomscrolling and archiving it all is my quasi-job at this point. Not good, folks, more and more people are saying it. I'll get over it eventually.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

US carried out strike on facility in eastern Syria: Pentagon

The Pentagon said the targeted facility was being used by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated groups.

In a statement, the Pentagon said the “precision self-defense strike” was carried out by two US F-15s in response to attacks on American personnel in Iraq and Syria over the past weeks.

The US also said the targeted facility was being used to store weapons.

“The President has no higher priority than the safety of US personnel, and he directed today’s action to make clear that the United States will defend itself, its personnel, and its interests,” the Pentagon statement read.

This is the second US attack on facilities in Syria since the war in Gaza began.

Israel to begin daily four-hour pauses in fighting: US

The White House has announced that Israel has agreed to suspend fighting for four hours on a daily basis to allow for Palestinian civilians to flee from northern Gaza.

The pauses will start from today in what the White House said is a step in the right direction.

More from the White House

National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby added that there will be two humanitarian corridors for people to flee from northern Gaza, and that Israel has said that there will be no military operations in those areas during those periods.

Kirby said that the White House believed that the pauses were a step in the right direction, and want them to continue for as long as they are needed.

The US aims for no less than 150 humanitarian trucks a day into Gaza.

big win for Biden, the great statesmen

At Anti-"Israel" March in D.C., Explicit Expressions of Support for Terror and Antisemitism

The ADL has been to an anti-genocide march in Washington DC to look for expressions of antisemitism. And while they managed to find some actually problematic stuff like a placard talking about someone "pulling the strings" of genocide Joe, they also managed to find lots of other stuff, including:

Lamis Deek, a leader with the anti-Zionist group Al-Awda, called Israelis a “cult of torturers” who enjoy inflicting pain on children [...] She also venerated terror; called to “dismantle every institution of Zionist violence in the world;”

One poster replaced the Jewish Star of David in the Israeli flag with an emoji of feces, suggesting Israel be thrown in the garbage.

Raja Abdulhaq, a New York City-based political organizer and anti-Israel activist, said that an aim of Israel’s “war on Gaza” is to stifle political movements that oppose capitalism, playing into historic themes about Jews and money.

An attendee carried a poster calling Zionism “a cancer to this planet.” An overwhelming majority of Jews consider Zionism to be an integral part of their Jewish identities (regardless of their views about specific Israeli policies).

An attendee carried a sign that read, “Down with Zionism” and an Arabic phrase that translates to “Death to Zionism.”

Marte White from the Atlanta chapter of Community Movement Builders emphasized the Palestinians’ right to resist “by any means necessary:”

“…one of our principles is to stand in solidarity with other oppressed people fighting for self-determination, especially Palestinians. The first thing I want to get into here is that Palestinians are showing us what decolonization really looks like. This shit is real. Palestinians have a right to rebel. But that means that they have a right to right to free their land from the river to the sea by any means necessary. And I do mean any means necessary.”

An attendee held a poster suggesting support for all forms of action against Israel, including terrorism.

A participant carried a poster with the words “Resistance is Justice” and the likeness of PFLP leader and terrorist Leila Khaled.

The Mosaic Community, the orthodox Jewish religious organization who most Danish Jews belongs to and who is treated as representing all Jews in Denmark has reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents since the Al-Aqsa Flood. Their report describes several of the incidents and gives an insight in what is really behind the numbers we read in the media.

Physical violence is rare and there are no examples of systemic antisemitism or antisemitism done by employers, bureaucrats, cops or in similar relations with unequal distribution of power. Most of the incidents involves threats and slurs. All of the incidents described (except, perhaps, an incident where a Jew experienced having stuff thrown at a window displaying a menorah and a zionist flag) describes problematic racist behaviour that targets Jews. To the credit of the Mosaic Community, none of the incidents described are disingenuous labeling of anti-zionism antisemitism.

The motivation for the incidents can be placed in several categories. There are examples of what could be termed cultural antisemitism, like people making casual remarks about Jews being misers. Then there is the really nasty stuff where Jews are being threatened, harassed and assaulted by neonazis with a clear exterminationist goal. But what seems to be the most common motivation is misguided anti-zionism where people are justifiably appeled and enraged by zionist atrocities in Palestine and then misattributes them to Jews in general. Often a lot of these antisemitic incidents are provoked by the victim making pro-zionist statements and the perpetrator responding by making threats and insults directed against Jews in general.

If the purpose of the zionist occupation of Palestine is to keep Jews safe from antisemitism and if the driving factor of most antisemitism in the world is misguided anger over said occupation then one could be provocative and ask if the Zionists are not doing a piss-poor job by working hard to make all Jews look like genocidal maniacs.

Colombia Supports International Accusation Against Netanyahu

A PNC member praised Gustavo Petro for giving a lesson to the world on how to face the Israeli genocide against the Palestinians.

On Thursday, President Gustavo Petro announced that Colombia will support Algeria in the denunciation of crimes against humanity against Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Colombia will contribute to the complaint of the Republic of Algeria filed before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes against Benjamin Netanyahu in light of the massacre of children and civilians of the Palestinian people that he has produced,” he said.

On Friday, the Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister Alvaro Leyva will meet with the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to discuss the issue of monitoring the lawsuit.

“Once again, the Colombian President Gustavo Petro giving a lesson to the world on how to face a genocide like the one that Israel is perpetrating in Palestine, Gaza, in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. Another step for justice!!,” said Rafael Araya Masry, a member of the Palestinian National Council.

Previously, lawyer Abdelmadjid Marari announced that Algeria presented a class action lawsuit against Netanyahu at the ICC headquarters for the war crimes that the Israeli occupation forces are committing in Gaza.

This lawsuit was prepared by social activists and lawyers who went to the International Criminal Court in response to the words of the President of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who asked Arab legal experts and human rights defenders to file the complaint before the ICC to hold Israel responsible for the genocide.

Relations between Colombia and Israel have become strained since Israeli occupation forces began incessant bombing of Gaza on October 7.

As a result of the notorious violations of human rights, Petro called the Colombian ambassador to Israel, Margarita Manjarrez Herrera, for consultations. The Colombian Foreign Ministry accompanied this action by expressing its rejection of Israel's war offensive in Gaza

Israeli air strike targets mosque near hospital, market, bakery

Just a hundred metres away from the [Nasser] hospital, a mosque – the largest mosque in the area – was completely destroyed in an air strike.

What’s troubling about this air strike is it’s in the middle of a busy road – a main road leading to the side gate of the hospital and also a busy market with so many people out there shopping for daily essentials.

There’s also a bakery next to the mosque where a question of hundreds of people at least were waiting for bread.

An air strike without a warning, a bomb just fell on the mosque. So far, what has been brought to the hospital tens of seriously injured people. We don’t know exactly how many people have been killed.

About 100 pro-Palestine protesters have been disrupting traffic at an Ascot Vale intersection as thousands of punters continue to make their way to Flemington Racecourse ahead of the running of the Cup, according to police.

Police say the protesters arrived about 11am at the Epsom Road, Ascot Vale Road and Racecourse Road roundabout and caused traffic disruptions.

Two protesters, including a woman who climbed onto the roof of a white van and refused to get down, were pepper-sprayed and arrested, according to police.

Police say the incident remains ongoing, with about 80 protesters at the scene, and they have arranged for the van to be towed away.

It is reported Gennadiy Chastiakov was showing his son a box of grenades he had received as a gift when the incident occurred, Interior Minister Igor Klymenko said in a statement on Telegram.

"At first, the son took the munition in his hands and began to turn the ring," Mr Klymenko said Monday local time.

"Then the serviceman took the grenade away from the child and pulled the ring, causing a tragic explosion."

Earlier the Ukrainian army commander-in-chief, General Valery Zaluzhny, said an "unknown explosive device detonated in one of his gifts".

"Under tragic circumstances, my assistant and close friend, Major Gennadiy Chastiakov, was killed … on his birthday," He said on Telegram.

happy birthday, grennadiy!

The United Arab Emirates has announced it will establish a fully equipped field hospital in the Gaza Strip to treat wounded Palestinians, according to state media.

The state news agency reported that five aircraft carrying the equipment and requirements necessary for the establishment and operation of the field hospital departed from Abu Dhabi on Monday, heading to al-Arish airport in Egypt.

The agency said the hospital would have a capacity of 150 beds. There was no mention of whether the UAE had reached an agreement on the initiative with Israel.

has there actually been any video from Hamas showing infantry combat? all the videos I've seen show them destroying vehicles etc.

addendum: is this the occupation forces being too scared to fight an infantry battle? or is it a pragmatic call (they don't really have to, they're safer in tanks, etc). I don't understand how war works.

Raisi in SA

https://www.rt.com/news/584220-israel-gaza-hamas-attack/

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has called on Islamic governments to designate Israel as a “terrorist organization” due to its ongoing military operations in Gaza.

“Islamic governments should designate the army of the occupying and aggressor regime as a terrorist organization,” Raisi said at the Joint Arab Islamic Extraordinary Summit in Riyadh as Middle Eastern leaders convened to discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Raisi also called on Islamic countries to cut “any sort of political or economic relations” with Israel, as well as the introduction of a trade boycott “especially in the energy field.”

Raisi’s arrival in Riyadh on Saturday was the first time an Iranian head of state had visited Saudi Arabia since diplomatic ties between the two countries were normalized in a Beijing-brokered deal in March.

It's always especially irritating when a Vaushite smugly argues, "The US isn't a rogue state because the US is the one who dictates the terms. We have the power to stop all the Gulf states without even trying. Remember Iraq during the Gulf War?"

Someone said that recently. I look at his profile and he posts in "noncrediblediplomacy" saying, "You can always write papers pushing against the 'colonialism' narrative. That's how I passed most of my courses in college."
