I'd even argue just generally don't drop major spoilers unannounced for older stuff either.
For newer stuff tag ALL spoilers, for old stuff at least tag MAJOR spoilers?

- 1: No spam or advertising. This basically means no linking to your own content on blogs, YouTube, Twitch, etc.
- 2: No bigotry or gatekeeping. This should be obvious, but neither of those things will be tolerated. This goes for linked content too; if the site has some heavy "anti-woke" energy, you probably shouldn't be posting it here.
- 3: No untagged game spoilers. If the game was recently released or not released at all yet, use the Spoiler tag (the little ⚠️ button) in the body text, and avoid typing spoilers in the title. It should also be avoided to openly talk about major story spoilers, even in old games.
This. A prime example would be FFXIV, any FF game or any game really. If the game you talk about relies on twists and turns in the story you should use a spoiler tag even if it's 30 years old.
I'm still bitter about that one time someone asked me "The Sixth Sense? Isn't that the movie where
MAJOR PLOT POINT"
Bruce Willis turns out to be dead all along?"
I've never bothered to watch it.
Yeah, thanks for the suggestion y'all; and as someone who started playing FFXIV not even a month ago, good point!
I'd like to add that it would be nice to warn about spoilers about very old games too. I don't think that should be a rule, but just nice.
The whole "dude that game came out 30 years ago" argument doesn't make sense because not everyone plays everything (and not everyone has your age).
But, you just ruined Star Potter: Harry Wars for me by saying that!
And please mention what your spoiler is for. Some people may be fine with early game spoilers, but not late game things. Or they may be fine with game mechanics spoilers but not story spoilers. So please don't just wrap your whole post in a big spoiler/nsfw tag, give some context (as long as the context is itself spoiler free).
Good rule. Spoilers suck. Personally I also think spoilers for old games stink as well, especially if you're a patient gamer. For example, spoiling the secret from Bioshock ruins the impact of the ending, no matter how old that game is.
Also just a reminder that Lemmy has spoiler tags as well (triangle with an exclamation mark icon), so if in doubt use them, like so:
spoiler
Dumbledore did not have the high ground.
Thanks for the reminder, but that only works for text, right? If it works for images or anything else, then the NSFW tag won't be needed after all, but you got me wondering that now.
Please remember that not all Lemmy clients render the spoiler markdown correctly in the feed, and therefore spoilers may be seen anyway.
Over on c/formula1, we have a no spoilers rule in the post title, but given the above, we asked for the spoiler tags to be used as a courtesy.
