MODERATORS

  • Climate change is increasing the likelihood of synchronized crop failures across different regions of the world. This synchronization means global food shortages are more likely.

  • Key crop-producing regions like North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia are now experiencing more synchronized extremes like droughts and heat waves.

  • Synchronized crop failures became 5 times more likely from the 1960s to the 2000s. By 2100, this could rise to about 50 times more likely.

  • Wheat, maize and soybeans are the most affected by synchronized failures. Their yields all tend to be linked to climate.

I urge everyone to start growing food at home. Not only for a potential crisis such as described here but also to reduce the volume of food consumption coming from the very inefficient and high cost/emission supply chains. These supply chains produce waste from production to packaging and transport.

Even an apartment balcony is suitable to grow a bucket of potatoes and it's super easy. The future of food production is local, local, local!

It's important point that has been made here that calorie dense foods are better than salad leaves. A food garden should have calorific production as a high priority with less focus on leaves or watery crops.

That is, if you're serious about it when you read something like this article. There is no way I would be able to grow enough food to survive synchronised crop losses!

Sandponics is the next big thing. Same deal but simpler.

i don't imagine the fish like it?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

The ones that are eaten? Probably not.

You don't have to eat the fish as another option. They can be pets like an aquarium.

Nice! This guy is my go-to for aquaponics, he has tons of amazing content on his channel.

he's so great! i'm a huge fan - i really do want to try it but I know if I got slack on maintenance it would go to shit really fast, so i'll have to wait until I have more free time. I do want to take some time off and set something up that is somewhat sophisticated so requires less maintenance but honestly the apocalypse will probably get here first
