Each 'size' U-Haul rental item has a two letter code. Older items had 4 numbers before the code and four numbers after it, this was the item's serial number. When i worked there in the late 90s into the early 00s the 4 number prefix was a thing of the past, so i never learned it. It was replaced by a single letter after the second 4 number code and it denoted the year of the item (as well as the vehicle make). These car top carriers had three two letter code of KC (Kartop Carrier), they were discontinued because vehicles stopped being made with metal rain gutters (top which these were secured), yet customers insisted we attach then too their roofs anyway. I managed to buy one for my '79 Corolla but the sale never happened because U-Haul decided they were too recognizeable and worried that it would be reported stolen too often.
