Lately some YouTube shorts came up in my feed where some (North American) Youtubers claimed that shampoo only cleans your scalp and that only conditioner cleans your hair.

I thought to myself that these guys must be insane since shampoo is basically soap (and historically people used normal soap for it and I have also done that for a while) which shouldn’t distinguish between where the "oil and dirt is“ and frankly I rarely used conditioner and it’s very rare here in Central Europe and especially among men (and shampoo brands do have male shampoo versions but no conditioner). I lived in Asia for a few years where everyone used it and I did too without ever really asking myself what it does…(and didnt feel cleaner, just strangely smooth…).

However - I also saw some people on Reddit echo this "shampoo only cleans your scalp“ and even saw people under a video with someone with super filthy hair comment that "must have never used conditioner“ and I wonder if the world around me has gone insane, if shampoo in the Us is different or did I just wash my hair wrong all these years…?

Tldr: does shampoo clean your hair and we have a "hair flat earther“ situation here or have I no clue?
