German Americans are the largest ethnic group in the U.S however I’ve rarely come across an American with a German surname refer to themselves as “German”.
Whereas I’ve come across Italian Americans, Cuban Americans, Irish Americans, Mexican Americans etc and people within those groups would classify themselves as the country of their parents/grandparents’ origin first.
Anyway how comes Italian Americans, Mexican Americans & Irish Americans have more visibility in comparison to German Americans?
There’s an Irish bar within every corner of the U.S it seems, and Italian & Mexican cuisine you can pretty much find anywhere, not to mention there a lot of neighbourhoods that are unapologetically Italian, Mexican etc.
This is the best way I could phrase it, if I’m wrong about this I apologize.
