A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

For so long we have always referred back to Nazi Germany as the last massive fascist and authoritarian takeover, but with America at the gates ready to go full fascist, the Germans must atleast be relieved that in a few years we will be talking about MAGA America instead of Nazi Germany.

W for the Germans I suppose.

I think Putin and Netanyahu are a lot further along on this path. We will be spoiled for choice of places to refer back to.

Israel has actual protests against the government ongoing. It’s not clear if Netanyahu will manage to win the next election.

There are no protests in Russia at all and elections are a farce.

what do you mean ready to go full fascist? They're already there.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunately the AFD in Germany got record aupport in the last election.

Germany sees America go full nazi.

Germany: Hold my over sized beer!

[–] [email protected] 108 points 16 hours ago (5 children)

Believe it or not, we'd prefer no fascists anywhere.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Glad it was already said, and by an actual German no less!

I was going to say "If I know Germans, they're not happy. They'd rather leave fascism in the past and not have it exist anywhere. Also, whatever new government exists in the future, they'd like it to be really efficient, but also have triplicate paperwork. Which is somehow filled out easier than most single sheet forms."

But then you came in, and summed up everything I was going to say.

Except those Germans who still think being a Nazi is great. Of which there's a whole Eastern Germany worth of.

I'm German and terrified. I find it difficult to grasp that the playbook that was used in Nazi Germany is right there to compare, how the whole thing happened has been taught in schools to several generations in a row, there's memorial places to visit - the whole wealth of information is there so it doesn't happen again!!

And here we are, and it is happening again - in what seems an even more overt way than old Adolf ever dared to pull off. They just built a concentration camp in Florida and are loudly bragging about it. People are randomly being kidnapped from the street, based not even on their immigration status but their skin color, by groups of unidentified thugs. All while the media - even international media - still seem to be unable to call "Fascism" to what is happening.

I would have hoped that us being the eternal Nazis would at least have a deterring effect on other people to not fall into the same trap.

It all started again with the 'I didn't do that, how long have we got to apologize?!' mindset.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 hours ago

And other countries - including Germany ofc - are copying it.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 16 hours ago

Yeah, I'm fine with being reminded of our country's past again and again if it means others don't do the same bullshit.

I think there are also some interesting similarities with Mussolini. Just think of the role media played. Trump was really active on Twitter, while Mussolini used Il Popolo d'Italia newspaper to spread his message.

Horrified seems more likely

They are, Germans today don't fuck around with that, they punish it heavily like the US should have.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Unless it's Israel. Then, they confuse antisemitism with valid criticism of genocide, due to guilt over the Holocaust.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 hours ago* (last edited 4 hours ago)

They really don't amd honestly never did. Less people were punished at nuremburg than there were guards at Auschwitz. Many nazis got domestic government positions within years of the Paris Peace treaties and some got greater european positions of power like Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. Not to mention the many Nazis who were taken in by the US including the Butcher of Lyon who got a position with the US intelligence services where he hunted communists and taught torture. These days the AFD with direct nazi ties and explicit fascist ideology is doing great. Germany was never actually de-nazified

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 hours ago

The Americans DID punish fascism severely. My grandfather stormed the beaches on D-Day. He lost his best friend from grade school. They were barely out of high school.

As for the Americans of today? I don't consider maga to be American. Just like I don't consider confederates to be Americans.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 14 hours ago

I’m gonna guess that most Germans aren’t actually viewing the situation as a zero-sum game. So no, I don’t think the US breaking bad is going to make Germans happier, in general.

[–] [email protected] 38 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Actually as a german it does feel pretty shitty to see fascism rise in America and all around the world…

Even here in Germany the far right is growing stronger and it feels like history repeating.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

I mean, Merz is pretty fucking right wing.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Yes, but Spahn is the real danger (besides AfD, of course).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 46 minutes ago

Nah, Merz is just as dangerous.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 14 hours ago

And already has a proven track record of willingly and knowingly voting with then you further his "ideas"

[–] [email protected] 9 points 13 hours ago

Because everything everyone thinks everywhere is always about america...
