It baffles me that so many people go to the beach to tan intentionally when tanning is proven to increase rates of skin cancer and generally lower your immune system. 39% of women and 29% of men in the US intentionally seek out an outdoor tan (Source). Sunblock helps a bit but it's not perfect. I'm an Asian Asian and I noticed that when we use a UV-blocking umbrella people seem to laugh at us, even though the CDC actually recommends you do so.
So, people who tan habitually, do you not know about these effects or do you like the tan color on your skin so much you're willing to take these risks? No judgment here - I just want to hear the perspective.
