/c/TenForward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

The movie was ruined for me when he launches a rocket into a star that looks to be about 1au away and the rocket gets there in like 15 seconds. Dont tell me that ish was warp-capable.

It was equipped with "The Screenwriter and Director are Pretty Sure The Audience Doesn't Know High School Physics" Drive. Very powerful!

And if it was 1au away, it takes about 8 minutes for sunlight to reach earth. So if there were any visual changes to the star they wouldn't be able to see them for a few minutes

This is so correct, and upon reflection adds to the bad effect.

We don’t know the size of the star he blew up so we can’t know how far away he is. Maybe it’s a small star and they’re really close. Also why can’t the missile have warp? Dreadnaught, the missile reprogrammed by B’Elanna, was warp capable and it was designed and built a couple years before Soran tries to return to the Nexus.

One thing I never understood in the logic of this movie was:

Why bother with blowing up stars to redirect the Nexus if he simply could have bought a ship to fly into its course...

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

That was established in the 1st act that ships weren't a stable vehicle for transference to the Nexus.

Not so good movie, not so good changes to the Excelsior class, but boy do I love that whole scene. CG composited onto models will always look the best.

Blended practical effects FTW!

Still hoping for The Thing 2011 SFX Cut.

Soren hasn’t got the time for thirst-trap Klingons.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 weeks ago

He already had paradise, if only he could see it.

I always wondered, since soren did manage to get into the nexus the first time, and the nexus is outside time, did Picard's time shenanigans effectively "pull him out" again (if so why doesn't he remember) or is there a version of him now back in the nexus forever?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

is there a version of him now back in the nexus forever?

I don't think he exists in the Nexus like Guinan does. Guinan and the crew of the El-Aurian ship were beamed out by Scottie while the were phasing into and out of our existence and the Nexus. My head canon is that they were doubled at that instant (like Riker or Boimler). That's why she can be there and on The D at the same time.

[–] db0 4 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

No, but he got in the Nexus proper along with Picard, no?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes but he only exists once. Unlike Guinan who (according to my head canon) was duplicated. Don't get me started on the whole existing out of time bit because everything just falls apart when you try to make a timeline like that.

[–] db0 4 points 3 weeks ago

Ye, it's a bit annoying how often ST uses time travel nonsense.

Give or take. His species lives for centuries and I'm sure they lose track after a while.

I suspect the person you responded to understood the context, but was cheekily calling out the "technically incorrect" usage of ±

The ± symbol requires a tolerance value to create a defined maximum and minimum range, e.g 300±20 (so Soran could be anything between 280 and 320)

it doesn't mean "approximately"

But I understand this is just an inconsequential funny picture, so whatever right.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 weeks ago

it doesn’t mean “approximately”

They should have wrote ~300 if they wanted approximately 300.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Exactly :)

The unit (years) is also missing.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Well, that part at least I don't think is necessary. It's a parody of a dating app, and it seems from searching screenshots the real app doesn't have units either - just the number.

Which is just fine, because the number next to someone's name being their age is clear from context.
