Anti-Corporate Movement

This community is the first one on lemmy of its kind. It sits between the idea of anarchism/anti-capitalism and left leaning economic policy.

Our goal is to make people aware of the dangers of corporate control, its influence on governments and people as well as the small but steady abrasion of empathy around the world indirectly caused by it.

Current topics this includes but is not limited to:

Feel free to debate this but beware, corporate rhetoric is not welcome here. If you have arguments, bring them on. If its rhetoric trying to defend the evil actions of corporations, we will know and you will go.

Our declared goal so far is to have all companies and individuals worldwide capped at 999 mil USD in all assets, including ownership of other companies, sister companies and marital assets. The reason for this is that companies (and individuals) are not supposed to resemble small(?) countries with a single leader(-board) and shareholder primacy. Thats why we feel like they must be kept in check indefinitely.

But companies will just wander off The argument that large companies will just wander off is valid, which we embrace. We dont need microsoft, apple, google, amazon and other trillion dollar companies. There are small competitors being kept small and driven into brankruptcy by anti competitive behavior of these giants or simply bought up and closed. If starbucks left tomorrow, we would not have an issue with this.

But then we have x little microsofts that all belong to the same person(s) If in fact nobody was allowed to accumulate more than 999 mil in assets, they would not be able to own all these. And like defending agains burglary, it is not about complete defence but time and effort. You only have to keep the thief occupied long enough for them to be caught, give up or make a mistake.

But these giants have tons of IP which would then limit our growth Thats another topic we must touch on. We will (only this one time) take a page out of russias playbook and demand that IP of non complying companies (assets over 999 mil USD) will be declared invalid, which opens them up to be copied.

But then they will "live" in one country that doesnt accept this Correct, and they should be taken into custody the moment they enter the airspace of a country that supports this act.

The countdown has begun. On 14 October 2025, Microsoft will end support for Windows 10. This will leave millions of users and organisations with a difficult choice: should they upgrade to Windows 11, or completely rethink their work environment?

The good news? You don’t have to follow Microsoft’s upgrade path. There is a better option that puts control back in the hands of users, institutions, and public bodies: Linux and LibreOffice. Together, these two programmes offer a powerful, privacy-friendly and future-proof alternative to the Windows + Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

The move to Windows 11 isn’t just about security updates. It increases dependence on Microsoft through aggressive cloud integration, forcing users to adopt Microsoft accounts and services. It also leads to higher costs due to subscription and licensing models, and reduces control over how your computer works and how your data is managed. Furthermore, new hardware requirements will render millions of perfectly good PCs obsolete.

This is a turning point. It is not just a milestone in a product’s life cycle. It is a crossroads.

I wish my clients were smart enough to use anything other than Windows. The average American isn't. Oddly enough, I'm personally using this opportunity to migrate from Apple to Linux.

An thats by design. IQ points are falling in the US from what I heard due to stuff being made to consume only, not to think. I suggest trying to migrate users to linux mint as there is no big smarts necessary to understand it. it works just like windows.

In any case good luck.

I would love to but none would. They are too comfy in their microsoft world. I agree with you on the content made to consume, not to think aspect. I also think we keep making things easier and easier so that people don't need skills to do anything anymore.

I do understand how one can fall into fatalism. It is conformist to be fatalistic. but you have to at least try.

This is more of a "pick your battles" moment. These people aren't self-learners and would need to have their hands held at all times. They can barely comprehend Windows and macOS. They would become a burden on me and just switch back eventually.

I suppose we're talking about different things. I have people who are 80 and get linux on their old laptop. They learn where to click and they have it in a couple minutes. I might get a call here or there. Thats it. Maybe i didnt catch correctly how able the people youre working with are. I apologize.

The big difference is probably the willingness and aptitude of your clients. I'm not in a very smart part of my country and the people are generally set in their ways. I think they have a sort of fatalism in that they believe that they must obey the corporate overlords or they will not get to play in the sandbox.

Well good luck in any case. I hope windows implodes at some point. It would be great for everyone.

The world would be better without a marketing company moonlighting as a software developer.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Yeah, that would be nice too. Took me a bit to get it.

Uhm... You realise that this is a tiny edge case?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Sure. About 10% as edge case as Windows users making the switch to Linux. Those who are scared to move away from Windows to Linux can continue to use Win 10 IoT LTSC for another 5+ years. I shared this as a reminder that the end of support "coming soon" can be staved off for another half decade if desired.

So you're suggesting that instead of switching to a free and far superior, ethically much sounder alternative, one should buy another - closed and unknown to them product/license of win 10? In a community that is an outspoken enemy of microsoft and its shenanigans. Or have I misunderstood? Honest question.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Presumptive argument you're making. Most people worried about the expiration of windows 10 support aren't in the market to buy windows 10. They already have it. Either way, massgrave.dev exists and makes that a moot point.

What's closed about LTSC IoT? Download, install, activate for free and carry on.

Switching from Windows to Linux isn't an easy move for most people. Most of then freak the fu$% out at the tiniest difference, and Linux is not a tiny difference.

I switched before Windows 10 was released. I switched my Mom six months ago. Now she uses her work computer (win11) rather than her own laptop because, "the start button looked strange." If you think a support deadline will get windows users (since the nineties) to suddenly adopt Linux, you haven't been paying attention.

You're preaching to the choir about MS shenanigans. But... For those who feel they need win10, there is an option to continue chugging along until 2031.

As for Linux being "superior" to Windows, I think most Windows plebs would disagree. It "just works" is what they think.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

I think I understand why you're going on about this but it's still very confusing.

You're constantly contradicting yourself, one sentence after the other.

Of course windows is closed, the people you deem plebs will not go to massgrave. Windows is closed source software which has the customers data and hardware under control. if you argue that point you can also argue if the world is really round. it is just wasting my time.

Whatever "just works" for them is, is of no concern to me. I know that hundreds of people in my vicinity have adopted linux because it is better. You can now start more mental gymnastics but it still is only wasting time.

I have to remind you again, too: this is not the place to fight for windows or microsoft or any other capitalist hellscape. It is against the rules.
