I remember reading about a process for transporting hydrogen in some kind of sandform. This sounds quite similar.

Maybe in the future there could be tanks filled with aluminium + gallium-indium membranes and a second tank of saltwater. When hydrogen is needed, that could be inserted into the AlGaIn tank. Going to a tank station would "just" be to fill up on saltwater.

Probably I'm missing a few steps, but it's a possibility.
