Surprised that Reddit sided with the user
Reddit users have had a major hardon for tree law ever since somebody posted a thread about their neighbours cutting down their trees and finding out they were entitled to tens of thousands of dollars in compensation per tree.
Honestly, the indigenous nations should just sue the settlers for the trees they cut down. They'll own the whole continent.

My council actually did this.
Awesome! I'd love to hear about it if you don't mind telling the story.
Its nothing too exciting. There was a rancher not too far away from rez, and his property line extended just to the tree line, which was council territory. One day he decided to cut into the bush to extend his farm further for cattle. If the rancher had approached the council, i guarantee they would've worked something out, but he didn't. The council had him fined for every foot he cleared, which ended up being nearly 500,000$. Council bought a bunch of new stuff for the rec centre when they got it.
Nice!
