The rent is sky-high for probably unsafe (both crime wise but also health wise) housing. I searched for a rental in downtown NYC (both the Bronx and parts of Manhattan) and the rent is fucking crazy high for apartments that in 90% of the remaining USA would be 1/6 the price.
The constant noise like sirens, construction right outside your window, etc. Why would anyone want this? I know when I was younger (I am 30 now) I wanted to live right in the downtown of a big city to be "in the now" but I even though realized making the move would not be worth it so I didn't do it.
Is it because if you live downtown and work downtown you are able to be car free and no car payment = hundreds more in cash to pay for rent?
What is the catch here? Obviously some people love living downtown, even in not safe housing and I want your perspective.
