I'm about to leave shitjustworks because they have an AI header. I've had an account here on hexbear for three years, but I've also made an account there right before Hexbear started federating, and I've been using that one more. I largely stayed out of the drama between the two instances when that happened, so you may say I'm late to pick a side... But now I've definetly had enough of AI crap, so I'm falling back on this account.

Now, I just wanted to check how the logo was made. I don't think it's AI, it doesn't look that much like it and I remember it's been the same since before AI got that mainstream... But to check I wanted to see if the artist was credited on the banner, or the sidebar, or the lines below... But nothing. So, who's the artist and why do I not see them credited?:

It's definitely not AI. We've had that logo since the website was created in 2020 which was before public AI image generators were any good. As to who the author is, I'm willing to bet it was someone who was in the OG lifeboat discord server when /r/chapotraphouse was banned. They're probably not around anymore under the same name.

I figured so, but it's a shame we don't have a name, I hope that'll come up.

Until then Juan Guaidó will be declared interim creator of the Hexbear logo. guaido

We had the logo before the name change to hexbear so its probably from either the discord lifeboat or the original admins

Now im curious for the hexbear backstory. What was the discord lifeboat?

Ok so the timeline was like this

first we have the subreddit chapotraphouse about the podcast of the same name and it becomes a general leftist subreddit

after it gets really big (like over 150k people) reddit bans it over the "slaveowners should be killed" posts

a little before that a discord gets made refered to it as the lifeboat where part of the community joins

then there was a time were the original admins search for a new forum to migrate to and they choose lemmy

the site is originally called chapo.chat and has the hexbear logo

later its decided to change name to one that isnt tied to the podcast and Hexbear is chosen

finally after some time we decide to update the site to the newest lemmy vesion to enable federation and that were we are currently

fedposting this one's asking too many questions. Where did we get the logo from anyway?

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

fedposting also I'm not seeing any first and last names on the Github accounts contributing to Hexbear, as well as security numbers, can we have an update on that?

Lol, obviously I meant a pseudonym or account name.

~~Pretty sure @[email protected] made it if not~~ it was either an admin or dev that is likely no longer a part of the project, gave permission to use, and does not want credit for opsec reasons
