What’s the original painting supposed to depict? Can’t think of a situation where I would be debating with my skull in my hand.

I think it's depicting Christian martyrs who were killed in that manner. Martyrs were often depicted in the way they were killed in early church art.

Should have gone with sand with electricity inside. That would've been more logical
