What’s the original painting supposed to depict? Can’t think of a situation where I would be debating with my skull in my hand.
It was created by someone with meat and electricity inside their skull, wtf did you expect?

No, they were abtogethers
I think it's depicting Christian martyrs who were killed in that manner. Martyrs were often depicted in the way they were killed in early church art.
