I love monks, I really do. But they are not as strong as other martials.
They have fun theme, martial artists are always super fun to play. But when the optimized route for good damage on (almost) every single monk is a 1st level dip into fighter for Unarmed Fighting style or a feat at level 1 to pick up Unarmed fighting style? It’s not a well designed class.
I do think the pre level 10 is where a lot of Monk issues are apparent, as you will just burn through Ki in 1 combat and maybe not rest for 1-3 more encounters (depending on DM).
On low encounter days a monk can feel really nice. On high encounter days when you’re out of Ki? It’s a bummer to play.
Punching stuff is always super fun. But if you care about optimal, monk ain’t it.
