It's inspired by Iran's ban on western music. I don't think it's comparing cultures, just saying cultural conservatism sucks. Joe Strummer was cool.
nah the Clash were OG anti-imperialists. When Strummer found out that US pilots played that song whole bombing Iraqi civilians during the the 1st Gulf War, he said he broke down and cried. Named a whole album after the Sandinistas.
The lyrics of Rock the Casbah are about the leader of a nation trying to ban rock music, and the population doing the complete opposite the moment he has his back turned. It's basically just the plot of Footloose.
All's I'm saying is that by setting it in Iran it was manufacturing some consent. What they couldn't find an example of prudish censorship in England
