WTF is this open enrollment period restriction good for?

Why can't I just get health insurance when I need it? (or ideally, before I need it)

I lost coverage due to turning 26 and missed the 30 day window to enroll in a new plan. My fault for spacing on the date, but why does there need to be a time window anyway?

Knowing my luck, I'm gonna get cancer or run over by a car before November. Even if I survive, my life would be ended by debt. So I if there's an accident before then, it better kill me.
