I am wanting to spin up an Active Directory instance and have some fake users, just to practice working in it and get a deeper understanding.

Would you set up a VM with Windows or Linux?
Create a Csv of fake users data to import?

I just feel like it won't be that useful since I don't have any real world applications for it besides what I do at work so how can I take advantage of AD's uses if I don't have real users and groups.

All input and advice is appreciated ๐Ÿ˜

Just make up some users and groups. The labs I've done in college haven't had the hundreds of thousands of users that you would encounter in a real enterprise, but they still taught me all about rights, permissions, group policy, and most other features of Windows Server and ADDS.
