if you're doing hardcore mode--which is recommended--it is also recommended that you get an override for the survival mode's save limits. the game simply isn't stable enough to risk losing progress cause the damn game crashed

Using Horizon and my trusty F5 key still works just fine
I have a 100+ mod list that's a few years old that looked promising but my game crashed as soon as I left the intro area and I couldn't be fucked to figure out what mod was causing it by that point.
Fallout 4 another shot, but to mod it so that it's good.
this is impossible
I started with making the main character a silent protagonist and it improves things immensely
have modders also fixed the story and setting? or at least removed the skeleton and added walls or something to that blown out diner somebody is supposedly living in?
It's a Halloween decoration
With all the complaining I hear about these Bethesda games needing to be modded out the ass, surprised anyone plays them.
because the REAL fun part of Bethesda RPGs is daydreaming about doing a new modded run, then, spending 5 hours creating the perfect modlist to start the new playthrough only to immediately lose all interest the moment the game loads and you realize it crashes everytime you jump for some reason you're too tired to actually understand
Usually takes me a week to read through descriptions and forums, making sure there aren't any incompatibilities and it does what I want.
be careful with the unofficial fan patch since it seems to actually break a bunch of things in the game (at least it did for me), specifically regarding Cell loading, dissapearing trees and interiors, and just generally giving me more fatal crashes in general than my mod list ever gave me.
and regarding mod reccs, is there anything you're specifically looking for? QoL, revamped settlement system, change of aesthetics?
from the top of my head i can reccomend Sim Settlements 2 and its subsequent chapters, since its a pretty neat mod that not only revamps the settlement building mechanics, but also adds an entirely new story mode with a lot of custom-made assets and items
FROST was pretty fun imo. Hard as all hell though.
The best way to play FO4 is installing new Vegas (fourth one technically)
You're never going to be able to mod Fallout 4 into a good RPG since you can't mod out the godawful writing, but you could probably turn it into a halfway decent lootshooter/survival game wearing a cheap fallout skin. I'd just not bother installing individual mods and just install some modpack using Wabbajack.
