They aren’t even on the Lower Decks, but the mid-decks.
I love Lower Decks, but its characters have grown so much beyond where they were in Season 1.
I just wish the creators knew this would be the final season before work started.

MODERATORS
Lower decks could be a collection of miniserieses depicting JOs on various ships in the fleet. As each new 3-4 season arc debuts, we could see cameos from the OG crew as they serve as more senior lieutenants. Finally by seasons 12-16, we may get to see the original cast as XOs or ambassadors or something.
They've done a little bit of that in the latest season. Honestly, some of the best episodes

Yes, Star Trek™ should only be about familiar, brand recognizable characters. New ships and new characters scare audiences, which in turn makes investors upset with us. We at Paramount would like to apologize for not canceling this mistake sooner.
The pilot was shit though. Most of season 1 was just "what if Rick and Mort was in space still, but star trek?"
It got better. Not a lot better so I stopped watching, but people say it got even better after I stopped, so it's probably good now. Started out terrible tho

If you don't get a rick and morty vibe from the pacing, animation, and humor in the first few episodes then idk what to tell you other than that you're wrong, probably because you have an ideological commitment to not liking rick and morty and a consequent refusal to appraise something you like as being similar

I'm genuinely trying to figure out what you're referencing. Because the pilot episode of R&M had Rick drooling and shitting himself for half the episode while Morty just kinda wailed in terror in a hail of space-themed gunfire. And there was nothing remotely like that in Lower Decks.
I get the sense that you're just looking at the cell-shaded art style and drawing all your conclusions off of that. Or maybe you saw a two hour long YouTube brain-emulsifier video that tries to do some sort of weird shot-for-shot comparison between scenes in the most mind-numbing and pedantic format possible. Maybe you just had the capacity for enjoyment melted out of you. Idk. But you're comparing apples to anvils.

I don't even not like R&M. They're a very shit-or-miss show. When they hit, its very enjoyable. But other than being an animated comedy High Sci-Fi show, there's no comparison. Might as well say Star Wars and Star Trek are the same because they both have Wizards and happen in space.
It... was rough, yeah. In context of later episodes, it comes off as less egregious. At that point, I think they did have an idea of where the show was going and how they were going to develop the characters. I suspect, on the production side of things, they purposefully ratcheted up the Rick & Morty similarities early on to appeal to board-room bandwagon syndrome. ...i have no evidence of this, it's just the vibe I get...
Yeah, I think you're right. It is what it is, but it sounds like it ended up being pretty good. Moneymen should be kept away from creative I guess.
Also most Trek shows are pretty rough in the first season when the writers are still finding their footing. Most of season 1 TNG is hot trash.
