Omg at first I thought this was two people getting married with PayPal as the wedding officiant.

Congrats to the happy couple tho lol

Do you take this man to be your husband? We've sent a six digit code to your phone, please repeat it for yes.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I didn't get it.

Oh shoot I just got it after I pressed the button to get a new one. Now I have to wait for a new one... or can I just type the first one...??

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Now you receive 2 more and none of the 3 codes you've received work. You're out of tries. We've locked your account for security reasons, please check your email address from 1999 to reset your password and try again in 3 business days.

You know what... I want a divorce now

[–] [email protected] 50 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It’s so unbelievably annoying that PayPal doesn’t let you use whatever display name you want to. Not everyone uses their legal name in their social life.

I understanding needing you know your customer, but why not let me set what my display name is?!

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

? Does PayPal not allow this? PayPal has always called me "Praxis" lmao

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

They may have at one point but they do not now.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 years ago (3 children)

So are all PayPal users trans, or just dumb cuz they use proprietary software?

[–] [email protected] 62 points 2 years ago (3 children)

What? This meme is about a transaction between two trans people but that doesn't mean all Paypal users are trans. But I agree that PayPal is proprietary software and should be banished. I will delete my account now. I planned to do it for a while but haven't got around to it yet

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago

I assumed that this is supposed to be the norm, but yeh, funny meme. Good luck with getting your account removed.

[–] moosetwin 8 points 2 years ago

I will delete my account now.

this is really funny to me but I don't know how to explain why

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago

I never had a PayPal but I know my dad did and he very strongly recommended I don't get one, that they are bad for a lot of reasons, so I just never got one.

[–] [email protected] 44 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Are you dumb because the device you're on uses proprietary firmware?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 years ago

Naw, the meme just makes it appear negative that they don't see what's going on with their money. I I interpreted that as them being ignorant of what happens with their money, yet still use the service. Which yes, I would consider dumb... Just my opinion though, feel free to share yours.

Edit: Oh right, forgot to answer the question. I use graphene OS, so no worries about evil Google snacking on my data. (And Jerboa for Lemmy)

[–] [email protected] 38 points 2 years ago (1 children)

To be clear, the meme is that PayPal shows the users' dead names (presumably because the account was set up prior to their transition/legal reasons)

The "I do not see it" is referencing "not seeing" the dead names in the transaction details.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago

OOOOh, okay I didn't get that one. Thanks for clearing that up. Actually didn't notice that.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

But you didn't replace the proprietary bootloader, did you?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

True, I didn't. You got me there, I'm a proprietary bootloader using, apples feet kissing, winbliws using consoomer... Is it possible to change the bootloader on a pixel 6?

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Which open source software can I use to transfer money?

(not crypto)

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago (4 children)

Why use a third-party at all? It's been trivial to send money via bank transfer for a long time, check your banking app or website and you'll likely find a way to send money with just an account number + sort code. If your country has a system like faster payments the transfer will be near-instant too.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago

"bank transfer"

Laughs in US.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Banks are proprietary software

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Okay? But you presumably do still have an account with a bank or building society, right? So why use a third party when you can request a transfer from them directly?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Ironically enough it's the opposite. Banks answer to shareholders, building societies answer to its members. Building societies compete with banks, if they're unheard of in the US that certainly does explain the state of the US banking system.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

We don't have building societies in the US, but we do have similar institutions called credit unions.

America has Zelle which does instant money transfers by email/phone. It's private but it works in my banking app, is totally free, and is instant

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Zelle is a private company and not "America" wide. Your bank has to support it.

Otherwise, youre stuck in the paypal/venmo/cashapp loop with the rest of us.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

Yay for private interests lobbying our government!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Not in America! Every bank transfer is a series of hoops that is a pain to jump through which take days to update.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You don't have some system like IBAN allowing you to just send money to whichever bank you want within ome or two days (or in real time but with a fucking fee but that's about to change)?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Not a universal one, no. But there is one that a lot of banks use called Zelle.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Truly, capitalism breeds innovation™

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 years ago

I just made a new account and deleted the old one when I needed to change the name. It's stupid but it worked.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Is it hard to change your name on Paypal or something?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I think a lot of payment gateways require you to use your legal name, so if someone hasn't gone through all the paperwork legally then your PayPal will have to say whatever is on your birth certificate
