From the linked paper published in 1993:

Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended.

30 years was last year. So, he died because he was upset that his most famous prediction did not happen :(

I'd say so far so good. We do have the technology needed 30 years later.
