2023 was New Zealand's second hottest year on record and among the cloudiest, NIWA has announced.

Globally, last year has been confirmed today as the warmest year on record but in New Zealand the record belongs to 2022.

Or, said differently, it was the coolest year for all years to come.

Statistically... probably not. Variation year-on-year is almost certainly higher than average increase.

However, a particularly cold year sometime in the next decade may well take that trophy...
