I think the general consensus by the American media is that it's an antisemitic cartoon. That leads me to believe people are outraged because they look at the cartoon and think of it as the Israelis causing deaths.

Also surely this cartoonist has already been fired.

As far as I know - that hasn't happened and there isn't even talk (rumors, gossip) that the Buffalo News is considering it. It's worth noting that he's a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist. That's the sort super-important imprimatur libs have a hard time going against.
