This is a community dedicated to discussion around historical arms, mechanically unique arms, and Ian McCollum's Forgotten Weapons content. Posts requesting an identification of a particular gun (or other arm) are welcome.

Rules:

1) Treat Others in a Civil Manner. This is not the place to deride others for their race, sexuality, or etc. Personal insults of other members are not welcome here. Neither are calls for violence.

2) No Contemporary Politics Historical politics that influenced designs or adoption of designs are excluded from this rule. Acknowledgement of existing laws to explain designs is also permissable, so long as comments aren't in made to advocate or oppose a policy. Let's not make this a place where we battle over which color ties our politicians should have, or the issues of today.

3) No Advertising This rule doesn't apply to posting historical advertisements or showing more contemporary ads as a means of displaying information on an appropriate topic. The aim of this rule is to combat spam/irrelevant advertising campaigns.

4) Keep Post on Topic This rule will be enforced with leeway. Just keep it related to arms or Forgotten Weapons or closely adjacent content. If you feel you have something that's worth posting here that isn't about either of those (and doesn't violate other rules) feel free to reach out to a mod.

5) No NSFW Content Please refrain from posting uncensored extreme gore or sexualized content. If censored these posts may be fine.

How the MP5SD Makes Super Sonic Ammo Sub Sonic to Be Even Quieter (1970) (lemmy.world)

In order to minimize noise, the barrel was drilled with holes immediately in front of the chamber to bleed off combustion gases and reduce the muzzle velocity below the speed of sound.

This was light and easily manufactured, and would prove to work exceedingly well – setting the MP5SD at the top of the heap for suppressed submachine guns. It has really not fallen from this position since, thanks to an excellent combination of noise suppression, accuracy, weight, and balance.

Standard 9x19mm 115g and 124g ammunition travel faster than the speed of sound. This results in a loud crack. This design allows one to avoid that cracking noise without purchasing specialty ammo for a suppressed 9x19 firearm, resulting in less noise when shooting.

For comparison here is how three other suppressor work. But none of these decrease the velocity of the bullet like the MP5SD does.

This design has conical baffles following a blast chamber. It's a non user serviceable design.

This design has a tubular sleeve that screws onto the monolithic core.

This integral design features rubber seals that the bullet travels through. They close behind the bullet after it passes through sealing the gases in. This type of design allows for greater suppression at the cost of durability. The seals are only effective for a few dozen rounds.

All these suppressed pistols can be replaced with a mechanical crossbow bought in your nearest hunting store, which would be cheaper, deadlier, and more reliable, and also shoot better under water. MP5 is at least automatic, something the crossbow cannot do yet.

The benefit of a pistol is concealablity. You might get some stares if you hide a crossbow in your pants.

There are limbless crossbows now. I bet they'll make a pocket-size version eventually. Even the current mini crossbow options are not wide at all, the limbs are in line with the body when cocked, it's still not pocket size.
