People have to make that distinction all the time

That might be the case, but how significant it is to someones place in society is arbitrary, and how fundamental it is to a person's identity is a feature of our culture. You might not be able to change that simply by not acknowledging it, but there's a question of whether it should be significant, and implying significance isn't a totally neutral act. Not to say that's the same as it being racist.
