Many thousands in the meantime have died trying to take away the freedom of others, though

Thankfully for many in very horrific ways; just look up the fate of tunnel rats during the Vietnam war (God I wish there was a video game about murking invading troops in Vietnam in these tunnels, something like dungeon keeper but here you're the good guys)
