In the age of receiving CDs in the mail (like AOL), we would microwave them for 10 seconds to make coasters. The arcing would make neat designs in the CD
fwiw i'm pretty sure you can still get CDs for pretty damn cheap, so this is totally still doable and hell might even be a little side business
There’s lots of discarded ones if you know where to look
And fun to watch, too
In the age after total disregard for personal data, and the advent of personal data regulations, we'd burn tons of backup CDs like that.
