Because it’s saying they don’t want to be represented in power, they want to be represented by my equals. It’s in a vein of poetry that often follows a similar structure where disadvantaged people acknowledge that a president among us won’t solve our problems, nor will us being cops, but us being welcomed and accepted as peers throughout the community
Thanks for explaining that, I didn't fully catch that at first either. It's an excellent point!
