They were crazy advanced. in Pompej expander pieces were found that suggest that they used them to defraud of the water tax.

Also there were aqueduct lines that gad a height difference of 2m over a km. that translates to 2mm on a meter. You couldnt even measure such a tiny difference without special equipment today.
