Sorry, I know this will be an unpopular opinion- but I just can’t take them seriously at all. I’m sure they’re nice, but I can’t see them in any other way than cringy clowns.

You're not obliged to like these people but given the facts laid out in the article, the American authorities come out looking more clownish.
