Licking your lips dries them out. Chapstick is typically flavored/scented which encourages you to lick your lips, counterintuitively drying them out more.

Chapstick is also an occlusive rather than a moisturizer so it just keeps the moisture in rather than returning moisture to dry lips.

petroleum jelly is the way to go. my lips never get dry anymore since switching to it when chapstick made everything worse like you say meow-knit

That scares me - petroleum jelly is often packed full of carcinogens, even minor ingestion seems pretty bad.

Maybe there are good brands, but beee careful.
