My understanding of the Zune HD (or whatever the iPod Touch competition was) was the same. Technically better in every strict metric, but no app market to speak of.
I loved my Zune. The problem that gets overlooked (usually) is how terrible the software for transferring files was. It didn't follow any design conventions, was slow, fault intolerant, and didn't have half the features of other available media managers.
It might have had a chance despite being late to market but it was impenetrable for normal users.
It was so young ago I don't really remember what it was like software side. The nifty thing I do remember was being able to share a song wirelessly to my friend on the bus who also has a Zune.
