Sounds to me like they didn't care to speak to their aunt and weren't involved in her life, now they want cash.

I bet if the male escort wasn't a male escort but a caring neighbour the family would still come for money, doesn't read like the nature of their relationship is a problem. They should be grateful for the escort that their aunt had company, considering how awful loneliness is.
