At least you know you'll be learning Chinese as spoken by the Chinese

Mandarin Chinese isn't just a language.

Its vernacular is manipulated by the Chinese Communist Party to reflect political goals.

This is paralleling the concept of Orwellian "goodthink" from 1984's Newspeak.

After all, it's hard to think of rebellion, if there are no words or phrases for new concepts.

It's one of the reasons why the CCP wants to destroy related languages like Cantonese, so that they can manipulate thought more easily.

Spooky dooky! I sure hope Chairman Winnie the Pooh doesn't use the Sapir-Worf Hypothesis on us!

Wouldn't OP, should they learn a second language, still have access to their mother tongue? If so, I'm not entirely convinced learning Mandarin is going to have a doubleplusungood effect on their thinking paradigms. Please correct me if I'm looking at things from the wrong angle, however!
