A complete tool, yes. But this tool had the rare opportunity to begin to realize how he was being used, shortly before being killed as a direct consequence of his toolishness. That’s good writing.
I agree it's good writing. I don't think I agree with the concept of who someone "really is" apart from what they do.
There's some utility to why; what they would do in other circumstances.
But aside from that, no.
