I really wish someone would just set up "GOG for anime seasons" and let me buy and download MP4 files (or whatever) so I can have an offline collection legally.

Whilst I agree, there's (currently) nothing stopping you from buying the DVDs? Many of the shows I've wanted own for repeat watching are released that way.

Though it's probably a time-limited thing, given that physical media is getting rarer and everything is now all about rent-seeking, where you'll own nothing, have nothing to hold, and be thankful to be able to pay monthly for it.

It can be expensive depending on the show. One of my favorite anime, The Legend of the Galactic Heroes, last printed DVDs in 2004. Enjoy dropping several hundred dollars for them. You can get the blu-rays but now you're paying nearly a thousand.

I assume those would be 2nd-hand as well? Which kind of misses the point of wanting to support the creators since that money won't be going to them.

Yes. That said, the blu-ray was something like $800 even when it was new.
