From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

Look, we know System76 laptops are based as fuck. I mean, Coreboot, Open source firmware, PopOS, and a fucking open source mobo in the works, just so fucking based.

But man, these framework laptops look cool too. Completely modular and easy to work on. Looks like the company has proved it isn't going to go under anytime soon.

I'm debating what to get once I feel like upgrading from the trusty ol ThinkPad. What would you buy?

I vote for Framework, but privacy and security are important values for me. System76 is still running 3rd party trackers on their website. The Google ajax scripts are particularly concerning. I called them after I bought my Lemur and asked if they’d consider open source analytics and remove some of the trackers due to privacy concerns. They said they have no plans to change their existing business relationship with Google. I won’t purchase anything else from System76. I know it’s not everyone, but some of us in the Linux community take privacy seriously and I think System76 does themselves a disservice ignoring that segment of the market.
