From the article: It costs about 1 to 2 USD to clean 1 cubic meter vs 0.2 to clean fresh water. Si we don't do it because it costs more. But we are running out of fresh water so maybe in the future the costs of both will be similar and we might switch. Although salt residue is still a problem to deal with which adds costs to desalinate.
