Playing Dragon’s Dogma Dark Arisen - it’s started doing the “Vulkan Shader” process again that takes 20 minutes every time I turn on the game.

Why does it keep doing this? Can it not just download what it needs to once? And that’s it? No more?

I’ve been reading if I turn them off then there can be issues? Is there any solution to this?

I took a break from games for like 2 weeks to focus on work for a bit, but I didn’t really find myself missing it too much.

Now I do more, and I am enjoying Indiana Jones, and I’m wondering if you guys have gone through a time of just not having fun gaming and what title got you back into it.

Previously Enjoyed Games:

  • Elden Ring
  • Mass Effect Legendary Edition
  • Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Hollow Knight (all-time favorite)
  • Outer Wilds (all-time favorite)
  • A Short Hike (absolutely loved)
  • Balatro
  • Tunic
  • Hades
  • Disco Elysium
  • The Witcher 3
  • God of War (2018)
  • Spelunky
  • Divinity: Original Sin 2
  • Shadow of Mordor

Preferred Genres:

  • Action-adventure
  • Metroidvanias
  • Story-rich games
  • Roguelikes (as long as they aren’t too punishing)
  • I’m open to others if the game is engaging and not too drawn out

Budget:

  • No strict budget

Other Notes:

  • I’m feeling a bit burned out after finishing several long, heavy games back-to-back (Elden Ring, Mass Effect, BG3)
  • I recently started Expedition 33 and enjoyed it, but hit a wall around 12 hours in -just feeling tired of long games
  • Balatro was fun and I put in ~20 hours, but it’s also a bit frustrating at times
  • I’m looking for a palate cleanser: something fun, shorter (<20 hrs ideally), and engaging
  • I want something with soul, personality, or magic, but not overly chill (I found Stardew Valley too relaxing to keep my interest)
  • I’m holding off on playing Hades 2 until it’s out of early access

Edit: Blown away by all these responses - love this community. Thanks everyone!

As the title says, I'm a 34-year-old husband and father of two with a loving wife. I used to be an avid gamer before I got married at 26. I kid you not, I would game upwards of 10 hours a day on weekends and a few hours every night after work throughout my 20s. In my teens, it was constantly playing football after school and then gaming until nighttime.

But as I got older, I had less and less time to game. Kids, wife, responsibilities, etc. I would always see videos of new games I wanted to play when they came out, God of War, FF7 Remake, Elden Ring, but I knew I wouldn't be able to play them. First, due to time constraints, and second, if I bought a PS5 or built a custom gaming PC, my kids would jump on me and try to play or disturb me. This happened every time when I tried to play my old PS4

I mistakenly purchased the Nintendo Switch OLED (it was a mistake because most of the games weren't up my alley). The interface wasn't great, I didn't have the motivation to play it due to the lack of games that I would like. I ended up giving it to my teenage nephews.

However, while I was building my side project InnerSight (you can check it out here), which is essentially a journal for introverted people who don't like sharing their feelings with others, I had a realisation. The app uses AI models to help you dive deeper into your thoughts and reflect on your entries. Through testing it by writing my own journal entries, I realised that as I grew older, I sacrificed a lot of things that made me happy to fulfill my responsibilities and duties as a husband and father. I always felt guilty about spending money on myself or taking time to do things that make me happy.

Through journaling, I realised one of the things that truly made me happy was gaming. This led me down a YouTube rabbit hole of finding the best gaming device for me. Consoles and PCs were out of the question.

I wanted something I could pick up and play at night instead of doom-scrolling YouTube for my daily dopamine hit. That's when the YouTube algorithm led me down the path of handheld gaming PCs. Although there were apparently more powerful options like the ROG Ally, Legion Go, etc., everyone who made videos about the Steam Deck OLED loved it. Most comments were like "just get a Steam Deck," mainly due to SteamOS.

About two weeks ago, I ordered one (1tb version). Got it in a week, and ever since then, every night for 30 minutes to an hour before bed, I'm gaming. Currently playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Bio Shock Infinite from my old Steam library. I can't begin to describe how much happier I am; my whole family has noticed a change in my mood.

Instead of doom-scrolling YouTube Shorts or trying to watch something on Netflix, I'm able to relive one of the best parts of my childhood. Although it's only about an hour (which in your 30s is more than enough), I feel so happy, and it's all thanks to the Steam Deck. It's not Windows, it's pick up and play, resumes from where you left off, and there are always discounts plus cloud saves.

TL;DR: I love the Steam Deck OLED and wish I'd bought it sooner.

If you're on the fence about getting one → just get it.

We put a lot of effort into compatibility with everyone’s favourite portal gaming device, so we’re delighted that The Necromancer’s Tale now has the “verified” badge :-)

The Necromancer's Tale on Steam

The Necromancer’s Tale is a story-rich RPG which released 3 weeks ago, and is going well (93% positive so far) with particular praise for its story and writing. Follow the moral decay of your character as they get sucked into black magic and, eventually, raising the dead –initally for knowledge, and later for revenge and to assuage the voices urging you from the Realm of the Dead.

In terms of graphics, we targeted mid-to-low-end devices, so the Steam Deck comes up smiling with all but the max settings. The top-down camera view certainly helps.

In terms of playability, many people prefer using a joystick to run around rather than mouse and keyboard, plus the 2nd stick makes a very serviceable virtual mouse during combat and inventory management (for everything else, we have mapped the D-Pad).

Hi! This is my first ever console, and I'm looking for games that can give me 100+ hours of playtime.

For context, here are some mobile games I love: • Clash of Clans • Mobile Legends • Zombie Catchers • Roguelike games like Soul Knight

I'm not really into story-heavy games like Cyberpunk, GTA, or even big titles like Elden Ring. Maybe it's just me, but I find it hard to get invested in games where 50 to 60 percent of the time is spent reading dialogue. I prefer games that get straight into the action. I'm okay with a bit of story, maybe around 20 percent, but not too much.

I also don't enjoy RPGs that require precise aiming. I feel like those are best played with a keyboard and mouse. Plus, I get motion sickness easily.

I used to play Valorant on PC because my friends did, but when they stopped, I stopped too. And again, motion sickness hit me hard.

To be honest, I’m not really a gamer. I'm just a newbie who wants to get the most bang for my buck—games that are fun, worth the price, and easy to jump in and out of. Something I can play during lunch breaks, after work, or whenever I’m bored, without needing to remember where I left off.

I’ve played the original Binding of Isaac for 10 hours and couldn’t get past level 5 😅 but I really enjoyed it. I'm also open to trying other genres.

Previously Enjoyed Games: Clash of Clans, Mobile Legends, Zombie Catchers, Soul Knight, Valorant (only played because of friends), original Binding of Isaac (played for 10+ hours, stuck at level 5 but still enjoyed it)

Preferred Genres: Roguelike, casual action, games with short sessions and quick gameplay loops. I’m not into story-heavy games or anything that requires a lot of reading or remembering where I left off. But I'm really open to play other genres :))

Budget: No strict budget, but I want games that offer good value for money and lots of replayability (ideally 100+ hours).

Other Notes:

Here’s what’s on my current wishlist, based on some YouTube videos I've seen: • Dave the Diver • Cult of the Lamb • Stardew Valley • Hades • Hollow Knight • Binding of Isaac: Rebirth • Dead Cells • Vampire Survivors • Risk of Rain 2 • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

If you’ve played any of these or have recommendations based on the kind of games I enjoy, I’d love to hear your thoughts!
