For context I’m 28 years old I’m not a hardcore gamer or anything but have always found games as a form of escape or a way to relax myself.

I was on my steam deck playingg RDR2 during my work break and a colleague just came up to me and said “aren’t you a little too old to be still loving video games”. Idk why it just made me feel a little shit now I find myself subconsciously hiding while gaming around others.

Are there any gamers my age here? What’s the age range in this sub? It’s crazy how one comment has stuck with me now

I chose Legion Go over Steam Deck last year mainly because of the bigger screen and slightly higher power. And yesterday I sold my Legion Go and bought a Steam Deck OLED. I regret not making this decision sooner.

I already have a decent desktop PC and SD is a better complementary device imo. Better portability and battery plus I'm so happy that I'm ditching Windows. "Just get a Steam Deck bro" was right after all...

Am I the only one who does this? Every time I travel, I pack my steam deck. Then I never ever use it. It's kind of funny. Whenever I don't pack it, I end up kicking myself as I wish I had it to play games. I just got back from like a week and a half to with a lot of down time and didn't play it once! I did go to play it at one point on the plane but I left my deck sleeping the last time I played it and it died.

So here we are—summer holiday 2025. My wife and her family think it's weird that I bring my Steam Deck on holiday. Something about "holidays are for relaxing" blah blah… For context, none of them are gamers, so I kind of get where they’re coming from. But hey—it’s my holiday too, and gaming is how I relax. Without it, I’d just be bored sitting around the apartment in the evenings when we’re not out eating or spending time together.

One of the main reasons I brought it was to get through Split Fiction with my son—gaming is one of our main bonding things, and this is prime time to actually enjoy that together.

Right now I’m into racing games after finishing Horizon Chase with my mates. I just got EmuDeck set up and am having a blast with Burnout 3: Takedown from PS2 (minus the Smash Crash events—those are kind of dull, tbh). Any recommendations for other fun racers? Bonus points for split-screen co-op or battle modes.

So yeah—anyone else get side-eyes or sighs from the family for bringing the Deck along? Please share your stories of eye-rolls and passive-aggressive comments so I don’t feel quite so alone with my vacation button-bashing 😅

Happy summer, everyone! Hope you all get to squeeze in some quality game time. 🎮🌞

What are the most popular games that you CAN'T play on the SteamDeck that you wish you could?

I went through the DF/JK series last month and found helpful resources scattered here and there, but nothing in one central location, so I created this guide. I won't go into detail about what each thing does, this is really just an install guide for the most common ways to run the first two games in the series. All of this is extremely easy to install, but can be tricky.

I also played Outcast and Jedi Academy using Luxtorpedia, but I don't have the details about how I got Luxtorpeda installed (google search that to play those games)… but maybe that guide will come later? Anyways, I hope you find this guide helpful!

FYI: I'm using the steam version for both of these games. But the GOG version should work similarly, just change the directories.

1. Dark Forces - The Force Engine

For information on what TFE adds and changes to the game, you can read about it here: https://theforceengine.github.io/

  1. Download The Force Engine here: https://theforceengine.github.io/downloads.html
  2. You can extract the folder ANYWHERE on your Steam Deck's directory. Contrary to other posts, it doesn't matter where you extract it, but it might help putting it somewhere where you have these types of games installed (like home/deck/Games)
  3. Add TheForceEngine.exe as a non-steam game and force "Proton Experimental" and you're all set.
    • Don't use the official Dark Forces .exe to play the game.

Open "TheForceEngine.exe" to boot the game up using TFE and you should be good to go!

2. Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 - OpenJKDF2

  1. Download the win64-debug.zip file from the latest release here: https://github.com/shinyquagsire23/OpenJKDF2/releases
    • The files can be hard to find because there's a lot on the page, but keep scrolling down, and you'll find the files listed under "Assets"
  2. Extract everything from this folder into the location of JK.exe (for Steam, it's here: home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Star Wars Jedi Knight/)
    • Unlike DF1, you need to extract this to the same location as the main game
  3. Add openjkdf2-64.exe as a non-steam game and force "Proton experimental".
    • Don’t use the official .exe to play the game.

Open up "openjkdf2-64.exe" in Steam and you should be good to go!

Hi everyone!

After my last update about the games I was playing, this update won't be as fun.

I haven't been able to play to much as the pain as been would destroying, the deck has come to save the day many times but I often feel so much in pain or so sick I find it hard to even play my deck.

I am slowly starting to play a little more and hopefully will get back up to full capability soon!

If I haven't replied to you, I haven't ignored you, each message means more than you could ever know, I am just finding it so difficult to apply myself.

Anyway! A little gaming update

I have started playing Chrono Trigger and loving that.

I finished Mass Effect and it was incredible, so glad I experienced that game before the end. I wanted something similar and Dragon Age Origins pops up often, so missed it in the sale but will keep an eye out for it.

Still putting time into outer wilds, everything has slowed up, but I will with all my strength fight to play your recommendations! I will not leave before playing the all!!

Once again, thank you for taking your time to read this and I'm sorry my updates aren't more interesting and frequent but, once I'm back gaming I know I will feel better and I know you will all keep going along.

Once again, any questions please come by and drop a message, awareness of cancer in younger people is needed more and more so always come back to chat!

If you just want to chat about games or life, that's also so welcoming!

All the best M

I know Steam Link usually gets a bad rap in comparison to Moonlight and Sunshine, but I wanted to share my experience in case it helps others. I was having constant stuttering issues with Moonlight (a hitch every 1 to 1.5 seconds) that I couldn’t solve, even after trying every setting and tweak I could find. Out of curiosity, I gave Steam Link a try, and it’s been flawless.

I’m streaming from my PC to my Steam Deck over a 5GHz Wi-Fi connection. I tested Cyberpunk 2077 running maxed out at 60fps and the experience has been completely smooth. No noticeable input lag, great image quality, and only a couple of minor audio glitches. Genuinely shocked at how well it’s performing.

To install Steam Link on the Deck, I just switched to Desktop Mode, opened the Discover Store, searched for Steam Link, and installed it. After that, I added it to Steam as a non-Steam game so I could launch it easily from Gaming Mode.

If you're using IEMs or stereo headphones like I am, I also recommend switching the in-game audio setting to “Stereo” instead of “Headphones” or virtual surround. It helps eliminate audio artifacts when streaming.

I’m not saying Steam Link is better for everyone, but in my case, it’s outperformed Moonlight in every way. Worth a try if you’re having issues with other streaming setups
